Welcome to my sweet little corner of the world! My name is Rianne and I've had a lifelong love affair with all things sweet. I'm a thirty-something desperate housewife and wannabe domestic goddess. I live with my husband and two kids in sunny San Diego, California. In 2003, I left my job as an academic advisor to pursue my dream of becoming a pastry chef. I attended the San Diego Culinary Institute and loved every minute of it. I was lucky enough to train under Master Pastry Chef Bo Friberg and Chef Yves Fournier. I interned at Opera Patisserie and started working at Hans and Harry Bakery after graduating.
Unfortunately, my new career as a pastry chef was short-lived. I had to leave my job a few months after I got pregnant because I was having serious complications with my pregnancy. My son was born six weeks prematurely and it was then that I decided to put my career on hold to stay home with him. While adjusting to being a stay-at-home mom, I continued to experiment in the kitchen. I also tried my hand at cake decorating and really liked it. Eventually, through word-of-mouth, people started asking me to make cakes for them.
When my son was diagnosed with multiple food allergies, I stopped making cakes and focused on taking care of him. The irony of it all....I love making delicious desserts for everyone, but the one person who matters to me the most can't eat them at all. I spend almost an entire year learning how to cook and bake without using peanuts, seafood, eggs, soy, wheat or dairy. A year later, my son outgrew his wheat and dairy allergies, which made a huge difference in his food options, especially desserts. I've included an allergy note to each of my recipes to make it quick and easy to find out if they contain any of the top 8 food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, eggs, soy, wheat and dairy).Right now, I'm still experimenting in the kitchen and I'm slowly getting back into making desserts for friends and family. I started this blog so I can share recipes, ideas, stories and basically anything that has to do with my passion for making desserts.

Hi,
do you sell cakes?
Thank you for your interest in my cakes, but I just make them for friends and family. They do recommend me to their friends and I make cakes for them too but I only have time to make a few cakes a month and that's plenty for me.
If I get lucky, I'll open up a shop and make cakes for everyone :o)
Thanks so much for your post! I LOVE your site, and your beautiful food photography. I had to laugh at your comment about the irony of having a child with food allergies. I have been addicted to all things sweet since a kid, probably haven't gone a day without some sort of sugar in my diet, yet I have this amazing little boy with life threatening food allergies. :) I would love to add your blog to my list of blogs with your permission only...a great resource for my readers, and me as well! Thanks!
I just came across your blog. I am blown away by your photographs! Wow. the recipes sound and look lovely.
YUM!!! yes, open a shop!
Your photos are beautiful and recipes sound wonderful. I have to try the caramels. thanks!
I just scrolled or read through all of your posts!
You have a terrific blog. Great photos and beautiful desserts. Especially your cakes! When I have time I will definitely read the ones I just skimmed through.
Btw, one of my twin boys had life threatening food alleries as well. He also had/has some other issues but has out grown all of his food allergies. They were born 8 weeks early so I can relate to your situations.

Wow! Thanks Ingrid for taking the time to go through my blog. I really appreciate it.
I'm hopeful that my son will outgrow more of his food allergies as your son did. Thanks for keeping my spirits up :-)
Love your site and recipes so much I have added a link to my blog. I hope that is ok with you, just let me know if not. :-))
I'm in college pursuing a BA in psychology, but lately I've been dreaming of running a bakery instead. You're an inspiration! I love your recipes and photos. :)
Hi.....just found out your blog.....it's so wonderful to find someone like you, who shares your ideas, your techniques step by step....i will keep on following your blog, it sure will help me a lot......nice knowing you....
I am just curious, do you plan on going back to the pasty job or staying home with the kids for a bit longer. I love your blog!
Hi Underground Cupcake! I'd like to stay home with my kids for a bit longer, at least until they're old enough to go to school. We'll see. In the meantime, I'm having fun blogging about the desserts I make and sharing what I learn with all of you :-)
Hi nice to meet you, I also live in San Diego and I go to Hans and Harry bakery once a while when i don't feel like baking. I am a cake decorator if you plan to open your shop I am intersted in a position.
Rianne, I love your personal story! I can really relate to the part about quitting your job and going to pastry school. And, I fully understand your decision to focus your anergies on your family, at least as long as that's where the greatest need lies; I did the same sort of thing, (though not because I'd just had a baby). Beautiful blog--I just discovered it. Lovely photos and tempting recipes.

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful allergy free recipes! My 21 month old daughter has several of the same allergies. This will give her a few more options to snack on!
Great Blog!
